Boeing Engineers in OKC to Execute $84M Contract
Last week, Boeing announced the receipt of an $84 million contract from the U.S. Air Force for upgrades to the avionic software for the B-1 bomber fleet. Boeing engineers based at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City will work with engineers in Long Beach, CA to develop the software and test it in labs and on mock planes.
According to a release, the award continues a software-sustainment program that has continually updated and improved the B-1 fleet since the aircraft entered service in 1989. Each software upgrade makes improvements related to navigation, weapon delivery, radar, electrical multiplexing, communication and navigation management, controls and displays.
"We are honored to continue providing these upgrades to the Air Force and are excited about all the B-1 potential that will be provided with [this latest contract]," said Mahesh Reddy, Boeing's B-1 program director, in the release. "This major [work] will enhance the aircraft's color cockpit displays, data link, radar and navigation in ways that will significantly improve B-1 aircrews' ability to execute their missions."
